ORA-12638: Credential Retrieval Failed Error Message

Symptoms

When trying to connect to the Oracle database you may receive the following error message:

Cause

The authentication service failed to retrieve the credentials of a user.

Solution

In order to solve this issue you need can try to do the following steps:

1. Try to lock and unlock the PC, where such error appeared. If it will not solve the issue proceed with the next step.

2. Restart the Windows Service for Oracle. If it will not solve the issue proceed with the next step.

3. Go to the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory and open the sqlnet.ora file. Search for SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= and set it to SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES=(NONE). Save the file and the issue should be solved.
